Tom Sokolowski

Like most practitioners in this field I was led to it by my own health challenges,  which included a year of CFS/ME in 2010-2011. What little energy I could spare in that year I used to research into nutrition.

I then completed a postgraduate diploma in naturopathic nutrition and put my new knowledge into full-time practice in 2014., having now more than once experienced the profound benefits of dietary and lifestyle changes on my own physical wellbeing, cognitive function and mood.

How I work with you in clinic

In clinic I make use of information you give me about your symptoms, diet, medical and symptom history, sleep patterns, cognitive functioning, toxic exposures, lab test results, sometimes genetic testing and more, in order to make recommendations in 4 main areas: diet, lifestyle, supplements and lab testing.

It can be a challenge to make such changes so I work with you to hone my recommendations according to your needs, interest, goals and life circumstances so that what we agree on together is realistic and achievable. You will receive these recommendations in a written report, usually within a day or two, but always within a week of your consultation.

I explain the reasoning behind my recommendations, so you can feel more engaged in the process, and I welcome any questions you may have during a consultation.

My work outside of clinic

When I am not working at my one of my clinics (in London, Totnes or online), preparing for clinic or writing reports, I spend my working hours on research, study and writing articles and making videos for my website, all of which helps to keep me open to new ways of supporting healing from various conditions with dietary and lifestyle medicine. This is particularly important, since each individual is unique and requires a unique approach.

For 5 years I also devoted 1 day a week (or sometimes 2 days)  to research and development for a functional blood testing laboratory.

Conditions that I work with

Since every system of the body is connected to every other system, I do not specialise. I work with a wide variety of symptoms and diagnosed conditions, including (but not limited to) gut conditions such as IBS and IBD, fatigue, hormonal imbalances, insomnia, high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, autoimmune conditions, poor cognitive function, acne and other skin conditions.

I have worked with many clients with depression and anxiety. Whereas the work I offer is no substitute for psychotherapy, counselling, and various somatic therapies when needed, sometimes the physical health of the body can have a profound effect on mental health and cognitive function. In particular there has been much research in the last 10-15 years on what is known as the gut-brain axis, reflecting the strong channels of communication between the gut and the brain. Interestingly there are more nervous pathways from the gut to the brain, than the other way round, challenging to the idea of the brain being the one in charge.

I do work with neurodegenerative conditions, and there has been some fascinating work since 2014 providing evidence that Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis can often be reversed with dietary and lifestyle changes. In the case of Alzheimer’s disease the success rate in these research studies is around 90%. I use similar strategies for the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease.

Parkinson’s disease is more challenging, with only a few anecdotes of reversal, and no documented trials of successful reversal in the research literature to date. There are, however, some approaches with some initial evidence of an improvement in symptoms and we may be able to slow or even halt progression.

I am also happy to work with you in a preventative way if that is your interest.

I do not work with people with cancer or with eating disorders.

More information

There is a lot to be said about what functional medicine, naturopathy and nutritional therapy are, the principles and the origins of these approaches (which may go back to ancient China and Taoism in particular), nutrigenetics consultations, who I do or do not work with, prices and services, what to expect in clinic, more about me and my training experience and CPD.. This information is covered in some detail on my website, and a good place to start the Devon Naturopath page.

You can learn more about health by reading my blog. My video and written post introducing inflammation is a good place to begin, and from there you can follow links to further posts with both theory and practical tips to improve your health.
